On September 8 local time, GlobalFoundries announced it had signed a final agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act. The firm can receive up to USD 375 million in R&D funding over five years upon meeting milestone targets, dedicated to its Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS) business.

The funding aims to build a secure domestic U.S. ecosystem for quantum chip R&D and manufacturing, moving quantum chips from lab prototypes toward commercial mass production. R&D covers cryogenic CMOS design kits, advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration. Its foundry platform supports superconducting, trapped-ion, photonic, topological and silicon spin quantum technologies.

On the same day, the US Commerce Department awarded up to USD 100 million each to Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum and Quantinuum to advance quantum computing technologies. Quantum computing is regarded as the next major technological frontier, with extremely high barriers for quantum chip fabrication.
